Why do Muslims not eat pork?

Islam is a complete way of life.

A believer strives to follow all aspects of Islam and not to pick and
choose to suit himself. Allah says in the Glorious Quran, (The meaning of which is)

“O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely.” (Quran 2:208)

God created us with the purpose of worshipping Him. Worshipping Almighty God does not
involve just prayer, supplication or rituals but is a complete way of life, living in complete obedience to His commandments and guidance.

In His knowledge and wisdom, it is only The Almighty God who knows what is best for humanity as well as what brings harm. In His utmost wisdom while He made many things “halal” (permissible) for humanity, He made a few things “haram” (prohibited).

One of those prohibitions is eating pork. Allah says in the Glorious Quran, (the meaning of which is):

He has forbidden you only dead animals, and blood, and the swine, and that which
is slaughtered as a sacrifice for other than God.” (Quran 2:173)

Analyzing the actual reasons why are there such prohibitions, is not a matter of prime importance for the Muslims. Sometimes we may never know or understand why God has ordained some things and prohibited others. What is of utmost importance is that we believe that no one knows better than the Creator Himself what is best for His creation. We have complete trust in our Lord and we submit to His will. Thus living by Islam, submitting your will to the will of the Creator.

In the case of pork, no specific reason for the prohibition is given except in the Qur’an Chapter 6 verse 145 when God Almighty says about the flesh of swine (pig), the meaning of which is:

“for that surely is impure”.

A Muslim submits to God’s commands willingly, without needing to know the reason behind the divine rule. Moreover, God has expressly stated that a believer hears the words of his Lord and obeys them.

“‘We hear, and we obey, and such are the successful (who will live forever in Paradise).” (Quran 24:51)

Today we know that there are many diseases and sicknesses that come from pork.

(Refer to https://www.healthline.com/health-news/why-are-disease-outbreaks-from-pork-products-on-the-rise#4).

But Muslims did not have to wait 1400 years (from the time of the last and final Prophet- Muhammad, Peace be upon him) to find this out and then decide to completely give it up. It is out of the complete trust in the Creator that when He forbids a thing it is only for the benefit of mankind.

So, to conclude it is not only a question of eating or not eating pork, but it is rather about total submission to Allah, in its true sense.

Submit to Allah.
